I feel like any object on Earth measures the passage of time just by the mere fact of it being an object. And the fact that an object exists means that it's marked in time inherently if one only has relation or bears relation — if some conscious entity bears relation to the object, it is marked in time. So all objects are objects which mark themselves in time, and that marking, despite even their pre-existence, is determined by the particular agent in the interaction.
I should live stream it and record the whole process of placing it on the roof, to see if it is actually how the change occurs — to see how the change looks over time. And this will allow me to record the object as proof of its change.
We're both going to read the sundial from the stream, but we will also mark it as a gnomon, and we can make the creation of the object the moment when I pierce the orange with the stick.
