Time

Week 3 Moodboard / Midterm concepts

Moodboard

I started to think about time by searching time on are.na. this was successful in that it showed me a lot of really corny clocks. a favorite of mine is the clock with the 7 bar lcd display. the way it signifies "computer time" is unmatched. People really feel its more precise. I like seeing it on taxi drivers consoles.

Then I started to think about an old idea of mine, the "ebook of hours" A slow time device which aligns ones natural rhythms to the medieval churches live schedule of fasting and feasts as noted through this book of prayers day by day. like a spiritual advent calendar, they had illustrations, quotes from important figures, a calendar. they often times were the only book a person would own. the e book of hours tries to come close to replicating this idea by using a slowly refreshing ebook screen to offer an alternative perspective to the travel of time.

I found ones in heart shapes, I found them in clovers. and I also found a beautiful black and white jacquard loom one which is inspiring because yada yada yada jacquard loom and all that.

I rounded out my moodboard with my favorite time keeping device, the midden. A midden is like a trash heap, a stack of shells which accumulates alongside a human environment. I first learned about them studying the indigenous communities of the place I was born in anacortes washington. We know about the settlement places in the summer and winter for tribes like the coast salish people by the shell middens they left behind. they serve as a record of things discarded, marine life parts from their overwhelmingly oceanic diet, along forgotten and discarded things. They built their houses into these piles creating a natural barrier around them.

You can find places now named things like midden lane.
