Gearing Calculations and Cuts

2023 - Collaboration with Yong

I assisted an artist named Yong with gear ratio calculations for a thesis sculpture. I created initial napkin sketches to understand the envisioned mechanical system.

An Excel spreadsheet was developed to explore various gear ratio scenarios:

• Yellow cells indicated the desired ratio between clock arms and the spinning sculpture
• Blue cells represented motor inputs under worst-case conditions
• Green cells showed adjustable variables for system optimization

I value creating systems that generate themselves from a few inputs.

Technical Contributions

DXF files were generated from Solidworks models for gear designs. A custom FDM-printed worm gear set was created to translate motion between gear stages.
